About
The History of the Sweeney Farms
Our story is deeply rooted in a farming legacy that spans centuries, tracing back to the 1700s when our family first tilled the soil. As a child, I spent summers on my grandfather's dairy farm, absorbing invaluable lessons in animal care. My journey continued in the '70s at the University of Maryland, where I delved into the world of large animals. During those formative years, a fascinating project captivated my interest – the crossbreeding of cattle with Buffalo, birthing the unique "Beefalo." This venture embodied the fusion of Bison hardiness, foraging prowess, and meat quality with the bovine's fertility, milking ability, and handling ease.
The Start of a Dream
In 2004, foreseeing the future of beef leaning towards grass-fed, Sweeney Farms embarked on a mission. Informed by consultations with medical experts regarding the perils of feedlot beef, we anticipated a growing demand for grass-fed alternatives. Our global quest led us to Australia, where we discovered the Murray Grey, a breed excelling on grass while preserving a tenderness gene.
Originating in the early 20th century along the Murray River valley, the Murray Grey, akin to the Aberdeen Angus, proved to outshine other cattle on the same pasture. In 2008, a groundbreaking moment occurred at the Midland Bull Test and sale in Columbus, Montana – a Murray Grey bull achieved a perfect 10 for marbling and a near-perfect 9 for tenderness, an unprecedented feat.
Our journey began with a Beefalo cow and a Murray Grey bull, and over the years, we've meticulously selected animals thriving on our Florida grassland. Our commitment extends to ensuring a stress-free environment for our cows, free from steroids or hormones. They're raised and finished on grass – a pure, wholesome journey from our family to yours. Know what you eat!
